320 Laps

I really stepped up the swimming this week, even though my favorite pool was closed. Over 5 days, I did 320 laps, which is 8km.

But conversely, my weight is actually UP. Sigh.

My (New) Fitness Pal

Now that I have a smart phone, I can try using a calorie counter application. It's only been a few days but My Fitness Pal has already affected my behavior by game-ifying my eating, tracking my weight and exercise.

If I want a rich snack, I'm motivated to exercise to increase my calorie budget. I'm motivated to use less oil in cooking and less dressing on my salad. When I complete my daily entry, it tells me things like "If every day was like today, you'll lose 5lbs in 5 weeks!" Expensive restaurants will be a challenge to estimate calories, but I'm pretty good at that (chains post their calories and they're searchable from the app).

Eating Out

This is the first week in a long time that I didn't eat out! It's been a loooong time since that last happened. In fact, I don't remember the last time.

I actually meant to celebrate the end of the week on Friday, but my mind wandered and resulted in me going to the grocery store rather than the sushi restaurant.

Back to Exercise

Well, I've started exercising again... with a vengeance! My goal is to swim a kilometer a day unless I make plans with someone else to do something. So far, in the last 5 days, I've been swimming every day but once. And the scale has dropped a couple of pounds, so that's good.

My arms are in a perpetual state of soreness, but I'm not sure if it's because of the swimming or the "One Hundred Pushups" program that I've been trying to do (with mixed results and dedication). I'm on Week 3/Day 3 of that program, middle column. Likewise with the "Two Hundred Sit-ups" program, of which I'm on Week 2/Day 3.

Sean came over and played table tennis with me a couple times too. Sadly, he's quite a bit ahead in his tally of wins - all because of one lousy streak that I had... ah well. It's still exercise if I lose, I guess! And he's been packing ON some pounds, so he needs to play more :P (Hey, I have to get my digs in somewhere if I'm not winning at ping pong.)

Wii Fit

Tried Sean's Wii Fit. It's pretty neat! After setting up your user with your age and height, it measures your weight and does a quick set of balance tests. Then, it calculates your BMI and your "Wii Fit Age".

Me: 26 (woo! real age 30)
Sean: 46 (ha! real age 35)

Anyway, the balance board seems really responsive, and the games that come with the Wii fit are pretty challenging and fun. The ski jump and soccer ball games are a lot of fun, while the yoga poses and the strength training is darned hard!

Hilariously, your Mii (the avatar that represents you) gets fat or skinny depending on your BMI. Then they run around with various speeds depending on how fat they are. My Mii was a bit pudgy - Sean's even more so!

Scaling It Down: Week 13-15 Plateau

I've totally plateaued... no weight loss in about 3 weeks! Augh. That's probably why I've been avoiding this entry.
Well, I've got my swim pass, so hopefully if I swim about 3x per week, I'll start to see it coming off again.

Scaling It Down: Week 11-12 Augh!

Not only is my scale calling me obese again, but my weight is back up a whole bunch! Augh!

This is the predictable result of my trampoline being broken and being in Nova Scotia and Ottawa for two weeks and not being able to cook my own food. I've gotta start swimming soon.

Scaling It Down: Week 9-10 Back to Normal

Sigh, it was too good to last. I'm back up a pound and a half. Still, I'm trending steadily down. Last week I was eating out the entire week in Halifax and only gained 0.2 lbs. So that was a relief. For the 10 week anniversary, I'm posting a chart of my progress! I actually usually measure daily, so there are more data points on this chart.

Scaling It Down: Week 9... Wow!

I was better with my eating this week, but my trampoline broke. So I haven't really been exercising. I can't find the receipt for the trampoline either. Argh. So I'm thinking that I'll have to get my hair cut and get back swimming, because the 'premium' trampolines are really expensive and I might have to mail order them in.

Surprisingly, for the last couple of days I've been losing weight REALLY quickly - I lost almost 4 lbs! That makes me think that last week's weight gain was an anomaly (I'm only 2lbs lighter than TWO weeks ago). As it is, I'm only 1 lb short of my next reward! And I haven't even spent the last reward money yet!

w00t!

Scaling It Down: Week 8 Back to Awful

Lulled by my weight loss last week, I relaxed on the rules a bit - figuring that I could gain a pound and still be on track. However, I guess that was a false sense of security, because I gained 1.6lbs this week! Wiping out last week's loss and more! (Or it could be delayed reaction from all the ice cream I ate last week... Lisa insists it takes about a week for exercise/eating to show up.)

On the negative side: skipped a bunch of exercising, ate a tub of Haagen Daz, ate a whole bag of chips and ate late a whole bunch of times, including last night! Not to mention cake.

On the positive side: not much, only that I ordered salad at Swiss Chalet yesterday for lunch instead of fries.

Scaling It Down: Week 7 Oddity

Hmm, crazy weight loss this week and a bit flaky on the scale. I'm usually a bit lighter on Saturdays compared to Fridays because I wake up later. But I do usually break rules and eat late on Friday which I didn't do yesterday - went to bed a bit hungry! Anyway, according to the scale, I lost TWO lbs this week! Granted some of that may be delayed weight loss from when I was sick. Differences in fat percentage and water percentage probably take care of the rest.
I didn't eat a lot this week, but what I did eat was pretty high calorie. Pasta with vodka sauce (easy and yummy and vegetarian - I'll have to post that), haagen daz ice cream (on sale!) and my first Swiss Chalet meal in over a month (so I got a double leg with fries!). But mostly, portion sizes were small, so maybe that's it.
I haven't noticed many physical differences, except that I think my double chin is gone and my pants are a bit looser. The man-boobs, however, aren't going ANYWHERE. (Too graphic for ya?)

Scaling It Down: Week 6 Failure!

Ugh, I actually gained almost 1/2 a pound this week! And my body fat percentage hit 24 percent for the first time in 2 weeks! I was sick and not exercising, and sleeping in so I was skipping breakfast as well. Even though I wasn't hungry, I still ate a bunch for comfort. So yeah. Not a good week.

Scaling It Down: Week 5 - Milestone!

I've officially lost 5.2 lbs since re-starting this endeavor! Judging by the numbers body fat percentage and water percentage, it looks like it's mostly water weight that I lost this week (boo!) but since we're going on weight, I get to award myself $100! It's hopefully not to be spent on food... the slush fund is for big ticket items, and there's only one food item in there! The kitchen scale might make more sense - though since it's more for baking than portion control, I doubt it would help!

I didn't do as much exercising this week as I did in previous weeks - will have to work on that.

Scaling It Down: Week 4

Ugh, I barely lost 0.6lbs this week. I'm not sleeping enough and I've been eating late. Although with the exception of one sushi buffet, my eating has been pretty good. Anyway, I still made my weight target and I'll try to be better next week! At least my body fat percentage is still dropping (at a slow crawl). On a day-to-day basis, the body fat percentage seems to be more steady than weight. I actually hit a percentage in the 22's this week (22.9, but still!).

ETA:
The other things that possibly slowed me down: My bags of skim milk ran out last weekend and I haven't gotten around to buying more. Thus, I haven't been getting the dairy calcium that's supposed to inhibit fat absorption, and I haven't been eating my bran flakes for breakfast. Double whammy!

Scaling It Down: Week 3

It's been an odd week - I've been staying up late and getting very little sleep. I've also been eating late. Throughout the week, that's been affecting my morning weigh-ins, which have been climbing. However, last night I got a lot of sleep and didn't eat too late, and my numbers were very good. I lost about 1 lb this week, so I'm still on the half pound a week schedule.

Among other things that I'm doing to lose weight:
  • Drinking lots of skim milk - apparently dairy sourced calcium reduces the amount of fat that the body can absorb.
  • Eating breakfast - I bought a big package of Bran Flakes and eat them with the skim milk to try to kick start my metabolism in the morning. Lately, I've been adding berries to make it more palatable.
  • Trying to exercise a bit in the morning on the rebounder/mini-trampoline and doing about an hours worth of rebounding a day.

Scaling It Down: Week 2

I was both good and bad this week.

My evenings have been awful... I've really been chowing down at all hours. The worst culprit is the cinnamon buns... mmm, cinnamon buns. I did give about 1/2 of them away, though, to parents and friends (Naomi liked just eating the sticky tops!). Over the course of the week I also went through a can of roasted cashews that the parents gave me.

On the bright side, I've been eating a low calorie breakfast each morning - a bit of bran flakes and skim milk - about 200 calories. Lunch is also pretty restrained, since there's limited amounts, whatever I carry to work. It's really just dinner where I'm bad.

I've been good with the exercise - I jump for 10 minutes or so before breakfast, and average about 1 hour per day on the trampoline. The night that I ate 4 cinnamon buns after dinner, I spent 2+ hours on the trampoline to try to make up for some of it. It seemed to work - I didn't gain any weight overnight (though I didn't lose any either).

So I lost 0.8lbs. Judging by the body fat percentages, that might be mostly water, but actually, this is the first week that's gone by where my body fat percentage has consistently been under 25% (averaging about 24), which means that my scale has been calling me overweight instead of obese! Yay!

Scaling It Down: Week 1 (try 2)

So far so good: I lost about one and a half pounds in the past week.
I've been watching TV while jumping on the trampoline, so that's about 1-2 hours of jumping a day. The numbers are lower than before, because I've been weighing in the morning - the daily numbers are also more consistent. Also, it encourages me not to eat in the evenings before bed (well, not last night), because you see it on the scale in the morning!
Encouragingly, for the last 3 days, the scale has been calling me overweight instead of obese! It looks like the cut-off for obese for my age/gender is 25% fat.

Scaling It Down: Starting Over

aka "Excuses, Excuses!"

Ok, I'm going to have to start over again and do it properly in the New Year.

Firstly, holiday eating has been disastrous! (Though I guess I haven't really gained a lot of weight.)

More importantly, I'll start weighing in the mornings... my weight is too variable in the evenings depending on what I've eaten that day - the morning measurements have been much more consistent after, you know, going to the bathroom and stuff. I knew this, but I got the scale in the evening, so that's why I started then.

Scaling It Down: Week 2

Well, it was a disastrous week! Lots of Christmas candy at the office, Christmas lunch at the Keg and another Christmas lunch from Swiss Chalet took their toll. Baking brownies for various people also took its toll. Baking pizza with mom added further. So I didn't lose any discernible weight this week! Argh.
Actually, had the measurement been just yesterday, when I did most of the eating, I would've weighed 173lbs!

Scaling It Down: Week 1

Week 1: Well, I did it - lost about 0.6lbs. Really, I fluctuate more than that on a daily basis. I weighed as low 1 lb less than that a couple of days ago. I followed the rules pretty good this week. More encouraging, my body fat was lowered and my water content was higher! (oops, slight correction - took the wrong day's stats!... Actually, I lost 1.6lbs!) Numbers after the jump...

Scaling It Down

Amended rule 1 again! Added results for the 1 week mark

My sister got me the Tanita Body Fat Scale 680, so it's time for me to lose weight! But how? It's time to lay out some ground rules...

The Rules
1) No food after 9:30pm Amendment: If I need a snack, it has to be veg in nature with no added fat - like carrot sticks, celery sticks, some chick peas, an apple etc. Amendment 2: I can break this rule if I'm out with friends and am going to bed after midnight.
2) No seconds! Save some for later!
3) Fried food 1x per week - usually this'll be my weekly meal at Swiss Chalet.
4) Weigh in at 10pm nightly.
5) Make an exercise rule.

The Goal
Lose 1/2 lb per week

The Rewards
For every 5 pounds, $100 into the slush fund from the savings
If I can get to 155lbs, I buy myself this:
Roland FP-7 Digital Piano
It's pure extravagance, seeing as I already have a digital piano, but...
