Relaunch: This is Why I'm Fat

I bought a domain name... so Random Thoughts becomes This Is Why I'm Fat.
I'm gonna try to post more consistently - but probably shorter posts.

Good Meat, Bad Meat

One of the questions I sometimes get asked is how to pick a good steak. Well, here's a visual aid (click to enlarge). On the left, lean value-priced strip loins. On the right, prime strip loin, streaked with fat of perfect thickness to melt into the meat gradually as it cooks. It's a fair bit more expensive, but occasionally you'll see it - buy it when you do!
This is why I'm fat.

Fat Spider

This monster spider lives just outside my house... apparently it's been eating well too!

Dinner: Soup

This is not why I'm fat. This soup rocked. Whole chickens were on sale (you're going to see a lot of chicken) and none of it goes to waste. The carcass was used to make the broth, which also boiled the shrimp shells. Lightly velveted breast (tossed with a bit of corn starch) and shrimp was barely poached - perfectly tender.

Dinner: Eggplant and Chicken

This is not quite why I'm fat. I love japanese eggplant, but it can soak up oil like a sponge. Cooking it in a hot non-stick pan solves a lot of that. A simple sauce of chinese oyster sauce thinned out with some water and chilli flakes makes for a good meal. I cannot bring myself to take the skin off chicken, though.

Eating Out

This is the first week in a long time that I didn't eat out! It's been a loooong time since that last happened. In fact, I don't remember the last time.

I actually meant to celebrate the end of the week on Friday, but my mind wandered and resulted in me going to the grocery store rather than the sushi restaurant.

Dinner: Veggie and Pork Stirfry

Parents dropped off some roasted crispy-skin pork from the chinese bbq. It's totally fattening but tastes wonderful. I've stirfried it with veg to make it a bit healthier but it tastes best on rice so there's a bunch of carbs too. I had two plates of this!

Thanksgiving Dinners

I had two thanksgiving dinners this weekend, the first with my parents and the second with my neighbours. There was a lot of eating to be had. On the other hand, I didn't eat much else, so maybe it'll balance out? And I have a ton of leftovers so maybe that will keep me out of the restaurants for another week.

The Fat Calendar

I've added a link just under the banner to a Google calendar that lists my food intake and exercise regimen.

Snack: Wings

This IS why I'm fat - chicken wings lightly dusted in cornstarch before frying. I didn't use enough spice or cornstarch so these were a bit sub par. But even sub par chicken wings are pretty awesome as long as they're not dry.

Po(r)ker Night

Had poker night with the guys - was great fun but probably the last for a while as one of our crew is going off to live in France. Sean was the big winner, making up for a lot of times where he lost a bit - heh. I did pretty ok.

Rick made some delicious pizza for lunch. His wife Val really liked the apple pie that I brought... but really? a bit sub-par... it needed a bit more acidity and the crust wasn't as flaky as I've managed in the past. It was ok

Dinner OMG dinner was some HUGE bbqed rib steaks that Aaron brought and cooked to perfection. I actually cut off a piece of mine because it was so big. And Jax sent Sean with marinated shrimp skewered on rosemary that was just fantastic after being grilled on the bbq.

After a short break we had lemon meringue pie (that was much better than the apple, actually... I really like the recipe) and tiramisu that Rick/Val made. I went back for seconds of the tiramisu because I love that kind of dessert and it was really really good. I ate it with a double shot of sweet espresso.

I was actually uncomfortably full on the drive back home. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.

Bake Sale

Bake sale at the office today supporting United Way.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't pig out quite so bad but Lesia's apple cake is really good. I haven't had it in such a long time because my sister has the Bundt pan and my oven is broken.

Shrimp Paneer Curry

I love paneer! My aunt gave me a precooked package of muttar paneer to which I added shrimps (gotta have meat) and some red bell pepper. It was pretty tasty, but the bits of paneer were definitely the best. I have to try making some - apparently it's not that hard.

Roast Beef Dinner

Cheap roast beef is always hit-or-miss. This one was pretty good, though. I'm limited in size because I'm using my toaster oven. Man, I gotta get that oven fixed... You can tell how fattening this is, but at least I did a lot of veg.

Steak and Veg

This was a good steak. I tried Montreal steak seasoning. Although, there's definitely an optimal time to leave it seasoned... a few hours seems optimal. More than a few days and the sesasoning overpowers the meat. Shorter, and it's just on the outside.

What's really killing me is all the halloween candy that I've been consuming. Damn, it's true - it's the devil's work!!
