Shopping With Trev

Went computer shopping with Trev today. He was looking for a new monitor and we found the Sony SDM-HS95P at a good price at Future Shop. We shopped the big box store because Trev's really picky about pixels, so the 30 day no-questions-asked refund was necessary. It was a pretty good price too $650CAN.

Sure enough, there was an always on green pixel near the center of the screen. So he's taking it to exchange tomorrow. Some speakers were also a very good price (I want...) down from $140 to $89, but they were out of stock.

If only I didn't have this stupid downpayment to save for...

Toronto Tripping

We started out in Kensington Market yesterday, which wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be. It was really just one big meat market - and we couldn't really buy anything perishable. There were some interesting cheese shops, but that was about it.

After that, we went to the Hairy Tarantula, a very... alternative themed... comic shop/hole-in-the-wall that only became weirder when I googled their homepage. Okaaay...

Afterward, we went back to Dave's condo and watched the uncensored puppet sex scene from Team America (featuring piss and scat! Ewww...) and the special features - which were actually more interesting than the movie itself. Also saw The Rock on TV - quite the traditional action type flick, but entertaining nevertheless.

Garlic Press

Went to the Cookstown Outlet Mall and found a garlic press that I've been keeping an eye out for in the Corelle shop.

I've had a couple of garlic presses that didn't really work, but the Zyliss Susi literally sprays a fine mist of garlic. You don't even have to peel it! Nothing gets left behind in the hopper except for the skin. It's awesome... really awesome - and will save bunches of time from now on!

It's been on a number of shows, including one that I used to really like - America's Test Kitchen - where it was the top ranked press.

Along with my Magnum pepper mill, it's one of my favorite single-purpose kitchen gadgets!

Number Crunching

Blearily eyed, I found this really cool java application for mortgage information: http://www.interestratecalculator.com/mortgage/mortgage.html

So I started crunching some number about my upcoming home purchase and got the following results, which were somewhat reassuring.

I've got a fixed rate mortgage set at 4.5% for 5 years amortized over 25 years. Ok, cool enough, assuming that I can manage to keep my job for that time. (I'm a worry-wort about job security.)

I should even be able to pay down a bit extra, maybe double my payments for those years. My needs are few and I don't have a vehicle to pay off... no drinking problem or drug habit...

So I started plugging worst case numbers after the 5 years and came up with the following. If I have to renew the mortgage for another 25 years (worst case), I should be able to survive any ONE of the following (or a combination of less serious events):

-having to work for minimum wage (job loss)
-interest rates shooting as high as 17%
-absolutely needing a vehicle and having to make payments

Of course, if everything goes ideally (I keep my job, no new expenses, no promotions...) that would be best. If I can manage that for another 5 years, I should be able to pay off my mortgage. After that, I should be able to survive on minimum wage. :)

Welcome to my paranoid world! (You should see my spreadsheets...)
Although, I don't really allow for retirement savings or inflation, I'll worry about those when they happen.

BBQ At Trevs

Went to Trev and Rucell's today for a BBQ.

There was waaay to much food, and I ate more grilled meat than was healthy :) I brought some pork and shrimp shishkabobs and some honeydew, but I probably shouldn't have - there was too much food as it was.

I manned the BBQ for a while. We also played horseshoes, and some of us (not me!) sang karaoke on Rucell's new karaoke machine. Judging by the crowd around it, it's fairly addictive!

Trev's mom, dad and brother and Aunt Tish were there, as well as several of Rucell's friends (Alan, Bernadette and little Nicole were the only names that I caught). Of our group, Erich and Catherine attended with little Gabby (who's walking now, when she can stand to let her feet touch the grass and has a mono-syllabic vocabulary of "No!"). Dave drove me there and back, even though it's within walking distance.

So yeah, it was a fun evening. Even though I lost twice at horseshoes.

Overtime

(backdating)
Our office got a new reception renovation and it was a pain to set up. Still, it looks pretty funky. The huge pressboard kiosks were replace with quads equipped with LCD flat panels on articulated mounts.

Setting it up needed to be done after hours (mostly). By the time the furniture and the wiring was done it was after midnight. By the time all the screens were mounted and computers imaged, it was 4:30 in the morning! I stayed over at Sean's house. We got about 2 hours of sleep and then headed back in. Poor Dom, it was his 24th anniversary! (Congrats, Dom!)

I'll have to find a picture of the new setup.
